A man was found unresponsive in the roadway in Vancouver’s Northwest neighborhood Monday night and police are asking for the public’s help in determining what happened.

Officers were called at about 8:10 p.m. Monday to the 4600 block of Northwest Harney Road for a report of a man down in the roadway, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

They arrived to find an unresponsive adult man lying facedown in the road, police said. The man had serious head injuries and was not able to communicate with officers, Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. Medics arrived and quickly took the man to an area hospital for treatment.

Police later identified the man as Lawrence P. Lairopi, 32. Neighbors near the scene reported hearing a vehicle engine rev and drive away around the time that the man was found, police said.

Kapp said that investigators are unsure whether the incident was a hit-and-run, and detectives with the agency’s traffic and major crimes units are teaming up to investigate the circumstances.

She added the man remained unconscious Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department tip line at 360-487-7399 or 911.
