Fire damages detached Vancouver garage, apartment

Fire damaged a detached garage and apartment Friday in Vancouver’s Hough neighborhood, according to the Vancouver Fire Department.

The fire was first reported at 2:53 p.m. as a grass fire near the intersection of Franklin Street and West McLoughlin Boulevard, but additional information from callers and fire crews en route to the scene pinpointed the source of the garage several blocks to the north at 511 W. 21st St., said firefighter-paramedic Pete Adams, public information officer for the department.

Access to the fire was complicated by the garage’s placement on an alley, which required crews to park on Franklin Street and drag hoses to reach the blaze, Adams said.

The fire appears to have started on the exterior of the building and spread up into the attic, according to Adams. He said 18 firefighters brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

Adams said the blaze did significant damage to the garage and the upstairs apartment, which was being renovated and was unoccupied. Fire did not reach the house nearby.

The fire is being investigated by the Vancouver Fire Marshall, he said.

Vancouver firefighters were assisted by Clark County Fire District 6 and AMR, Adams said.
