Letter: Show respect for signs

Why is it that some people think a political sign is theirs to vandalize as they please? Jerry Oliver, candidate for the state Legislature (Position 1, 17th District) is one of many candidates with large, expensive campaign signs throughout the area. Candidates must have permission to post their signs on private property. Oliver has such permission to post his sign on the Anderson Dairy property in the northern part of the district; other candidates have also posted there.

Oliver’s sign has been vandalized at least three times. This last time, the vandals basically destroyed the sign. Candidates’ signs are not cheap. And it usually takes two or three people to put one up. It appears that, not only was this sign knocked down, it likely was run over by a motorcycle.

If you don’t like a candidate, don’t vote for him. That’s the way our election system works. There are plenty of folks running for this position so the voter has a good choice. Moreover, it’s obvious the one(s) who vandalized the sign did it when they likely wouldn’t be caught. This isn’t the way a fair election should go.

Yes, I do have a dog in this fight; Jerry Oliver is a decent, respected man — and my husband of 54 years.
