Community notebook: Area women’s football team makes playoffs

The Portland Fighting Shockwave will open the Women’s Football Alliance playoffs on Saturday by hosting the Pacific Warriors from Los Angeles. The location and time of the game was not finalized as of late Monday.

The Shockwave, which include players from Clark County, completed an 8-0 league season with a 29-15 win over the Seattle Magestics on June 4 in Seattle. A pair of goal-line stands helped Portland to the win.

The Shockwave won the Pacific North Division. The Warriors were second in there Pacific South Division. Portland is ranked seventh nationally and Pacific is ranked eighth among the 44 Women’s Football Alliance teams. The winner on Saturday will travel to Fresno on June 25 for a national quarterfinal.

Camas boy wins race

Camas seventh-grader Sam Geiger won the 800-meter run for his age group on Saturday in Hillsboro, Ore., at the Portland Track Festival Youth Meet for 2016.

His winning time of 2 minutes, 7.14 seconds was a personal best and unofficially the fastest 800 meters time in the nation for a seventh-grade boy in 2016. According to Athletic.net, the previous fastest 800 this year by a seventh-grade boy was 2:11.13.

Geiger won two events for Liberty Middle School at the district meet for grades 6-7 this spring, the second year in a row he won two races at that meet. According to his mother Sherrie Geiger, Sam Geiger will next run in an invitational mile for middle school boys next Sunday during the Portland Track Festival at Lewis and Clark College.

Prep all-star rugby teams visit Vancouver

High school rugby all-stars will be in action on Saturday at Laurin Middle School in Vancouver.

The Oregon Red Hawks will play a round-robin tournament with two Washington teams, with three junior varsity matches followed by three varsity matches. The Red Hawks are the all-starts from area high school programs, including those in Clark County.

The Washington Loggers is the all-star team for Rugby Washington, and the Washington Wolverines are a Bellevue-based academy team.

Junior varsity matches are scheduled for 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Varsity matches start at 1:30, 2:15 and 3 p.m. This is a warm-up event as the teams prepare for the Great Northwest Challenge, a U.S. Rugby Regional Cup Tournament slated for June 25-26 in Corvallis, Ore.

CCRC run draws 100

Oscar Bauman, of Vancouver won the second race in the Clark County Running Club series of Wednesday evening runs. Bauman, 43, finished the David Douglas 5-kilometer Run No. 2 with a time of 15 and 46 seconds. A total of 100 runners finished the June 1 race.

Bauman was 59 seconds faster than 19-year-old Dan Nehnevaj of Vancouver, the runner-up.

The first woman to finish was Abby Knight, 21. She finished 11th overall with a time of 20:49. (Results are posted in the Community Scoreboard.)

The series shifts this Wednesday to Heritage High School, for the first of two Wednesday runs on a flat course that includes the Padden Parkway Trail. These weekly runs start at 7 p.m. Cost is $2, free for members of the CCRC.

Run benefits homeless organization

Run Like a Girl, which includes 10- and 5-kilometer courses and a costume contest, takes place on Saturday. Open to runners and walkers of both genders and all ages, the event is held to benefit Second Step Housing, a Vancouver organization that assists homeless families.

The 10-kilometer starts at 10 a.m., the 5-K at 10:15 a.m. A 1-kilometer run for kids starts at 11:15 a.m. The race starts and finishes at Fort Vancouver near Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. 5th St.

Cost is $35 through Friday, $45 on race day. Register and learn more at www.secondstephousing.org.
