Letter: Angry with law, contact Legislature

Now that this excruciating phase of the 2016 election is drawing to a close, there is an untold story that Clark County Elections is just too polite to tell. So, I must speak for them.

As a certified election observer with at least 100 hours of observation, and having voted in multiple states, I can assure you that if you are angry, frustrated, or just plain ignorant, Clark County Elections is not the cause of your personal problem.

Voting laws are established by the state Legislature. Clark County Elections not only follows those laws to the letter, it takes care that every vote is anonymous and is counted.

The 2016 political party process has been painfully hashed over in the media, but because Washington state is one of only three with mail-in-ballots, and one of the few states where party affiliation is not automatically public information, the uninformed electorate has exhibited an extreme level of verbal abuse directed at our election office workers.

If you have questions, by all means, call the elections office. If you are angry about Washington state voting practices, the people you should be yelling at are your local elected legislative officials. This abuse is unconscionable.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
