Harney Heights — Martin Luther King Elementary School’s King Cubs college-prep soccer club hung out with Nat Borchers on May 17, when the Portland Timbers defender paid a visit to the school.

Borchers spoke to the team about respect on and off of the pitch, as well as the value of hard work and education, similar to lessons the team learns from their coach, Eddie Esparza, en educational adviser at the school. Inspired by Borchers’ visit, the King Cubs scored a second-place finish in the Police Activities League’s youth soccer tournament that weekend.

“I’ve learned even if you’re losing, don’t give up,” fourth-grader David Smith-Myles said in a release from the school. “You can keep pushing yourself.”
