Camas police have identified the man who died at the scene of a Wednesday night traffic collision as William “Bill” Jessett, 88, of Camas.

The collision occurred at 5:34 p.m. in the intersection of Northeast Third Avenue and Northeast Hayes Street. Police and paramedics arrived to find Jessett unconscious. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Jessett was in the front passenger seat of a 1997 Ford Escort being driven eastbound on Third Avenue by his wife, Viola Jessett, 85. The other vehicle involved in the collision was a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer SUV being driven by Sol Claypool, 76. Claypool was northbound on Northeast Hayes Street.

Northeast Third Avenue was closed for more than three hours as Camas police and sheriff’s traffic detectives investigated. The investigation is still ongoing and no determination has been made regarding any charges, according to a Camas police news release.
