SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — The Springfield School Board has approved an exclusive-rights apparel agreement with Nike.

The Register-Guard reports the Oregon-based sportswear giant will provide the school district with $150,000 in product rebates for school uniforms and equipment over the next five years.

Varsity athletes at the district’s two high schools — Springfield and Thurston — will exclusively wear Nike apparel during games and other official activities. Non-Nike apparel can be worn at team practices.

Board chairman Jonathan Light said he had reservations about the deal, but felt the district had to approve it to benefit student sports.

Thurston High Athletic Director Justin Starck said the contract is a positive for student-athletes who he says deserve to wear the same quality of uniforms as those in Eugene, Medford and elsewhere.
