Timbers to host Galaxy in U.S. Open Cup

The Portland Timbers will host the LA Galaxy at 7:30 p.m. on June 29 in the in the round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Tickets are included in Timbers season tickets. Tickets are available at www.timbers.com, by calling 888-736-6849 and at the Providence Park box office.

The winner between Portland Los Angeles will host the winner between Real Salt Lake and Seattle in the quarterfinals on July 20. A draw on July 21 will determine the hosting scenarios for the tournament semifinals and final.

The Timbers advanced to the Round of 16 for a fourth consecutive year with a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday. The Galaxy advanced to the round of 16 by scoring three goals in overtime to beat La Maquina FC of the United Premier Soccer League 4-1.

Portland Thorns

The Portland Thorns seek to continue their unbeaten start to the National Women’s Soccer League season when they visit Western New York on Friday. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. from Rochester, N.Y., and a live web stream will be available at thornsfc.com.

This is the sixth road game in the first nine games of the season for the Thorns. Their three wins and five draws have them one point behind league-leading Western New York (5-3-0) and Chicago (4-1-3).

Rookie goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom has posted shutouts in her first two professional starts for the Flash, including a nine-save performance in a 1-0 win over Orlando last Saturday.

The Thorns have scored nine goals and allowed five through eight matches. Six players have scoreed for the thorns, with Lindsey Horan’s three goals leading the team.
