Full disclosure: I have been a hunter, served my country, and owned multiple firearms. I still believe (naively?) that there are many people of good faith in the National Rifle Association. I am not suggesting that hunters should be disarmed.
That said, the powers that be in the NRA seem to be nothing less than a very loud, effective mouthpiece for the gun manufacturers with an inordinate amount of political clout. When we can’t get a ban on a weapon that the Orlando, Fla., shooter used to get off 24 rounds in 9 seconds, the tail is wagging the dog. Deer hunters and homeowners certainly don’t need that kind of military firepower.
For Donald Trump to suggest that we need to take more guns into bars and taverns in order to protect ourselves (now there’s a good idea!) would be laughable were it not so absurd. How many more Orlandos, Sandy Hooks, etc., do we have to suffer through before Congress realizes that the gun manufacturers are only interested in the bottom line? (Congress won’t even allow the CDC to study the problem).
In the end, the gun manufacturers are no different than the tobacco lobby, perpetuating death and human misery in the name of profits.
