Washougal — Gause Elementary School students learned a bit about how their city works on a field trip last month, when they visited City Hall, the Washougal Community Library and the city’s police and fire stations. Gause teacher Julie Taie said the idea for the trip was to show the students how things get done in the community. “We are also showing them possible jobs that exist,” she said in a release from the district. “They hear about the skills they will need and the importance that education plays in preparing them for the working world.” At the City Hall stop, the students also planted seeds for pumpkins that will be given to Washougal families at the city’s annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival in October. The pumpkin planting was coordinated by Rose Jewell, assistant to the mayor, who told the students to stop by the city-owned beds and watch as the pumpkins grow over the next few months.
