New Sharp Corp. owner plans subsidiary cuts

Having recently completed a takeover of financially troubled Japanese electronics firm Sharp Corp., the leader of Taiwan-based Foxconn says Sharp has “too many subsidiaries,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

The comments by Terry Gou, chairman of the electronics manufacturing behemoth Foxconn, came at a yearly shareholder meeting Wednesday and followed the company’s $3.5 billion acquisition of Sharp earlier this year. Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., holds the contract for iPhone assembly as well as other major brands.

Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas and Sharp Laboratories of America employ about 230 people in Camas. Following the March acquisition, those companies said no changes were planned for the Camas campus. Local officials are expected to provide a statement next week.
