Letter: Set moral compass to guide reform

By Don L. Nickerson, Vancouver
Published: June 25, 2016, 6:00am

My father had a quaint saying when he was mystified by someone’s actions or lack thereof: “For the life of me I can’t understand why,” this or that. Even at my advanced age, some political and moral behaviors are so vacuous that I am mystified. And further mystified why more of those holding influential political office can’t seem to find their moral compass about violent deaths and gun control.

As my father might say if he were alive today, “For the life of me I can’t understand why the Democratic National Committee doesn’t pay for television ads that say, ‘when you go to vote, remember Orlando. Remember to vote against these senators who opposed reasonable democratic gun control proposals in June 2016. Here are their names in alphabetical order, photos attached.'”

A similar television ad might be posted by the Republican Party if they honestly feel incensed by democratic resistance to a bill of theirs that they believe would go a long way toward ensuring we will not endure the horror of another Orlando, Fla..

But from whatever source, Democratic or Republican, enough denial and posturing. Just get the job done of keeping weapons, especially assault weapons, away from terrorists, or the deranged or deceived whose egos become attached to the fascination of killing others.
