The number of people displaced by a Saturday house fire in Vancouver’s Hough neighborhood has grown to 13 people, according to the American Red Cross.

Volunteers went out to the house, 900 W. 16th St., again on Monday to provide temporary lodging and other assistance to more people they learned were living at the residence, Red Cross Spokeswoman Monique Dugaw said.

The agency said that 20 pets were also affected by the fire, Dugaw said. Among those were seven puppies that died in the blaze.

Fire officials said that the blaze started on a mattress in the basement but investigators have yet to determine what the cause was.

The residence is the same house where a 2014 fatal stabbing occurred. Court proceedings in that case indicated that the house was often open to homeless people.

In September 2014, 58-year-old Jack Yancey stabbed and killed Gary Adams, 50, after Adams had ambushed him outside of the residence. A jury found that the stabbing was done in self-defense.

Preliminary damage estimates say the damage from the blaze totals $80,000.
