OLYMPIA — Washington added 12,800 new jobs while the unemployment remained at 5.8 percent in January, the same as the rate for December.

A new report released on Wednesday from the state’s Employment Security Department says the state’s greatest job growth came in the retail sector, which added 3,500 new jobs. Education and health services added 3,300 jobs.

From January 2015 to January 2016, the state added 93,700 jobs, including 82,000 new jobs in the private sector and 11,700 in the public sector. Retail added 15,700 jobs in that time period.

Unemployment figures and job losses and gains are calculated using two different surveys.
