Detectives are looking for witnesses to a reckless driving incident in Five Corners that occurred minutes before the driver was shot and killed by police on Sunday.

The woman was driving a blue Mini Cooper around Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard, 76th Street and Covington Road around 4:20 p.m. Sunday. At one point, she was driving north in the southbound lanes of Northeast Covington Road and nearly hit two vehicles head-on, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Later that afternoon, the woman crashed the car into a field, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. She walked away from the crash, according to police.

About 20 minutes later and a few blocks away, someone called 911 to report a woman trying to force her way inside of his home, police said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and found the woman in a nearby backyard in the 9600 block of Northeast 81st Street, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said the woman, who wielded a hammer and knife, attacked the deputies, and they opened fire, killing her.

The shooting prompted a Vancouver Police Department investigation. Neither deputy was hurt, and both have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to agency policy.

The woman’s name and the names of the two deputies have not been released. The sheriff’s office released no additional information on the shooting Tuesday.

Vancouver police asked anyone who witnessed the reckless driving incident to contact Detective Barbara Knoeppel at 360-487-7436.
