Community notebook: Couve Clover Run draws 1,000-plus

Clark County runners win two of six divisions

More than 1,000 total runners participated in 3-, 7- and 10-mile races Sunday as part of the 2nd Annual Couve Clover Run.

Clark County runners winning their divisions were Kari Johnston, 34, of Vancouver and Allison Wrightson, 24, of Brush Prairie.

Johnston won the women’s 7-mile race in 48:18, while Wrightson won the women’s 10-mile race in 1:08:29.

In other races:

• Ian Chillag, 37, of Chicago won the 3-mile men’s race with a time of 16 minutes, 53 seconds. He was 12 seconds ahead of runner-up and top local finisher Trevor Hayward, 45, of Vancouver.

• Francine Neilampa, 34, of Flagstaff, Ariz., won the women’s 3-mile race in 18:25. Runner-up and top local finisher Polly Kirkwood, 51, of Camas was 2:35 behind in 21 minutes flat.

• David Hopper, 46, of Beaverton, Ore., won the men’s 7-mile race in 43:50. Runner-up and top local finisher Willy Sayers, 36, of Vancouver finished in 44:21.

• Hunter Bennett-Daggett, 32, of Portland won the men’s 10-mile race in 1:01:06. Runner-up and top local finisher Jaysun Pyatt, 41, of Vancouver, finished in 1:06:10.

Lacrosse teams swing into action

Camas opened its boys lacrosse season with a 13-6 win over Rex Putnam on March 15.

Matt Welinski scored four goals and Adam Soubh had two goals and two assists. Colin Kuhta fielded seven ground balls and Caleb Win fielded five and won four faceoffs.

Camas lost to Hood River on Friday 12-10. Adam Soubh had five goals and two assists, and Kuhta fielded nine ground balls. Elijah Manfredi had 11 faceoff wins.

League play begins at 8 p.m. Friday at Cardon Field against Selah.

Union — Union opened the boys lacrosse season with losses on March 13 to Liberty of Beaverton and on March 15 to Westview of Beaverton. In the 8-7 loss to Liberty, six players scored for Union led by two goals from Andrew Harrah. Cayden Thompson had seven ground balls and Dominic Mendez made 15 saves. In a 7-5 loss to Westview, John Stell scored two goals for Union.

Columbia River — Columbia River opened the season with a 14-5 loss to Tualatin, Ore., on March 14. River hosts Selah on March 25 and Richland on March 26 to begin league play.

Evergreen lacrosse girls fall

The Evergreen Lacrosse Club fell to visiting Seattle Prep 8-1 on Saturday at McKenzie Stadium. Maecy Arthur scored the lone goal for Evergreen. Goalie Molly Johnson made 13 saves.

After opening league play on March 10 with a 12-8 win over Curtis at McKenzie Stadium, the Evergreen Lacrosse Club lost a non-conference game to West Linn 15-2 at home on March 15. West Linn was the 2015 Oregon state champion. ELC visits Holy Names of Seattle on Tuesday. The next home match for ELC is March 30 against Tigard, Ore.

Rugby teams begin season

The high school rugby season kicked off on Friday with a match between rivals Prairie and Battle Ground at Laurin Middle School.

On Saturday, Union opened the Rugby Oregon season with an 80-5 victory over Oregon City, Ore., at Delta Park in Portland. Union played a fast paced running game with their experienced back line players and scored 16 tries to 1.

With the game being played on turf at Delta Park due to water logged grass fields, there were no goal posts for extra points. Five points were awarded for each try.

Union’s junior varsity traveled to Bend, Ore., and lost 33-13 to Summit after leading 33-12 at halftime. Many of the Union players were playing in their first rugby game. Player of the match was Parker Johnson with two tries.

On Saturday, all four Clark County schools in the Varsity Premiership will play a Laurin Middle School. Battle Ground plays Union Team 2 at 1 p.m., followed by Prairie against Union No. 1 at 2:30 p.m.

In the Club Championship division for teams with players from multiple high schools, the Clark County Warriors opened the season on March 12 with a 35-10 win over Oswego Rugby. Dallas Goodpaster scored two tries, and Joseph Bertalot, Aisake Vaea, Prince Samuel Isaako each scored one for the Warriors. Jacob Saulo made all five conversion kicks.

The Warriors have 27 players from seven Clark County high schools and one from The Dalles, Ore. A dozen players return with rugby experience.

The Battle Ground girls club rugby team visited West Linn for its season opener on Saturday. The girls team is idle until an April 2 home match against North Clackamas at Laurin Middle School.

Run to Remember slated for May 28

The Run to Remember will be held on May 28 in Washougal.

Runners and walkers can choose between 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer distances.

Cost to enter the 10K is $45 for adults and $25 for ages 16 and younger. For the 5K, prices are $35 and $20. The price for both distances increases by $5 on April 1.

Battle Buddies, an organization that provides service dogs for military veterans, is the event’s primary beneficiary.
