EVERETT — The absence of Everett’s top goalie did not matter on Friday as the Silvertips rode two goals from Dawson Leedahl to a 3-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks to open the best-of-7 Western Hockey League first-round playoff series.

Game 2 is at 7 p.m. today in Everett. Games 3 and 4 will be on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Moda Center.

The Silvertips’ 51-29 shot advantage reflected the territorial dominance for the home team.

Rookie goalie Mario Petit, filling in for the injured Carter Hart, made 29 saves to earn his first WHL career shutout. Petit was solid when needed in a game played mostly in the Winterhawks defensive zone.

In a dominating second period, the Silvertips outshot the Winterhawks 22-5 and built a 2-0 lead.

The first goal came seconds after Portland killed off a two-man Everett power play. Brandon Ralph beat Portland goalie Adin Hill from the high slot on an up-ice rush with 5:08 remaining in the second period.

Leedahl, returning from a late-season injury, made it 2-0 with 1:47 left in the second. He made his way to the front of the net unchecked after Carson Stadnyk won possession of the puck along the wall.

Stadnyk also assisted on Leedahl’s goal with 15:11 left in the third period.

Everett’s 51 shots were the more than the Silvertips had in any regular-season game this season, topping Everett’s 46 shots in a 3-2 loss at Portland in February.

Hill made 48 saves for Portland, including several acrobatic stops when the game was still scoreless.
