My wife and I having just returned from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., were rudely reminded of a few things. Having lived three-quarters of a century, we have lived through quite a lot. Much good, much bad. We spent four days going through the museums, and still didn’t see everything.
The last subject on our bucket list was the Holocaust Memorial Museum. We have read a lot of history on the subject, but the museum really, unfortunately, brings it to you like a slap in the face.
Of particular interest to us were the 10 years leading up to the full-blown horrors. We could not help but draw some parallels to this upcoming presidential race. Someone should take the Republican candidate by the ear, the one with the pompadour hairdo, and make him see how the whole thing started.
Donald Trump’s attitudes toward Hispanics, Muslims, women, and anyone else not fully in agreement with him are frightfully similar to the beginnings of the Holocaust. Even his speeches with all the yelling, gesturing, etc., are similar to Adolf Hitler’s.
Every American should be required to see this museum of horrors. Hopefully, they would come out with the attitude, “never again.”
