A ferret is expected to make a full recovery after being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after a fire at an east Vancouver home.

Firefighters responded to 14006 N.E. 65th St. at about 6 a.m. Tuesday, where they found heavy smoke coming from the house. All occupants and pets had been safely evacuated, but Jonesy the ferret suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by firefighters, Lead Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Lawry said.

The cause of the fire, which originated in the kitchen, remains under investigation, Lawry said. The fire caused an estimated $38,000 in damage to the property and $29,000 to contents.

The house had no smoke alarms, Lawry said.

“Fortunately in this case the occupant woke up and smelled the smoke,” he said. “The danger of not having smoke alarms is that the smoke can make you unable to wake up after it is inhaled.”

Lawry encouraged all residents to check that their smoke alarms are working and to install them if they don’t have them.
