What kind of father was your dad? Tell us your tale

“It’s easier for a father to have children than for children to have a real father.”

Pope John XXIII, who said that, was not a father — but he was getting at something real about fatherhood. While it may be a little too easy to become a dad, it can be confusing, humbling, frightening to be one. Especially in a time when rapid cultural change is giving familiar gender roles and traditions a vigorous shake.

Who was, or is, your father? Is he the old-fashioned guy who taught you fishing and football and fixing the car? Or was he more the type to take you to your first rock concert/museum visit/exploration of Powell’s City of Books? And, how’d that work out — for both of you?

Be it serious or funny, poignant or preposterous, we want your Dad story. Father’s Day is fast approaching on June 19, and we’d like to stuff that day’s Life section with true tales of Dad. Keep it brief, keep it honest — keep it legal — and send it to scott.hewitt@columbian.com. Photos are appreciated, too.
