A transient man who robbed a Vancouver 7-Eleven store in September was sentenced to more than two years in prison Thursday afternoon.

Rick D. Guilliams, 59, pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court to attempted second-degree robbery in the Sept. 14 incident at 3200 E. Fourth Plain Blvd. He originally faced a charge of second-degree robbery, but that charge was amended as part of a plea deal.

Guilliams entered the 7-Eleven at about 5:35 a.m., selected a bottle of wine and demanded a pack of cigarettes from the store clerk, Jesse Jenkins, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court.

He reportedly told Jenkins to put the cigarettes on the counter and said, “Back off, I’m packing,” as he reached into his right jacket pocket and patted it, the affidavit said. Jenkins told police he thought Guilliams was armed.

Guilliams left the store with the items, court records said. He was later apprehended in the 3100 block of East Fourth Plain Boulevard.

On Thursday, Judge Gregory Gonzales agreed to follow the attorneys’ previously agreed-upon sentencing recommendation of 25 months in prison.

Guilliams told the judge that he didn’t have “a whole heck of a lot to say” about the incident but said it was a stupid decision.

He said he has an alcohol problem, and plans to participate in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and will seek inpatient treatment once released.

Guilliams was given credit for 234 days in custody.
