The Portland Winterhawks made 10 selections Thursday in the Western Hockey League’s annual bantam draft.

With their first pick, No. 53 overall, the Winterhawks selected center Reece Newkirk of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Portland forfeited its first-round pick under sanctions handed down by the WHL during the 2012-13 season. It’s second-round pick was previously traded to Vancouver.

Players selected on Thursday were born in 2001 and won’t be eligible to play full-time in the WHL until the 2017-18 season.

Portland’s other picks were defensemen Jason Chu from Coquitlam, B.C., and Kade Nolan from Rouleau, Saskatchewan; forwards Connor Bowie from Fort St. John, B.C., Jaydon Dureau from White City, Saskatchewan, Kishaun Gervais from Yorkton, Saskatchewan,  Judd Caulfield from Grand Forks, N.D., and Holden Kodak from Surrey, B.C.; and goalies Evan Fradette from St. Albert, Alberta, and Callan Sandquist from Castle Pines, Colo.
