Prep roundup: Stepper wins three events to lead Woodland girls

Beavers win team title at sub-district meet at Washougal

Julia Stepper won the 100 (12.52), 200 (25.96) and long jump (17-3) to lead the Woodland girls track and field team to the team title at the 2A sub-district meet at Washougal.

Kate Cochran won the shot put (33-1/4) and discus (102-6) for the Beavers, McKenna Flanagan won the javelin (117-5), and Sarah Retter won the high jump (5-0).

Chloe Lindbo of Ridgefield won the 400 (1:01.66) and 800 (2:35.75). Other winners included Hockinson’s Alyssa Chapin in the 100 hurdles (15.74), Erykah Weems of Hudson’s Bay in the 300 hurdles (45.12) and McKenna Moore of Ridgefield won the triple jump (33-41/2).

In the boys meet, Aubrey Kraft won the shot put (51-71/2) and Joshua Bischoff (161-5) won the discus to lead Washougal to the team title.

Hockinson’s Kedrick Johnson and Ridgefield’s Silas Griffith and Brandon Lehto each won two events in the 2A sub-district boys track and field at Washougal.

Johnson won the 100 (11.39) and triple jump (44-3/4). Griffith won the 1,600 (4:37.35) and 3,200 (9:51.08), and Lehto won the 400 (52.35) and 800 (2:05.27).

Other local winners were Woodland’s Jacob Davis in the 110 hurdles (15.09) and Hockinson’s Cole Walker in the 300 hurdles (41.56).

1A Trico meet — Kari Staples of King’s Way Christian and Jenna Melanson of La Center were both two-event winners at the Trico League Championship track and field meet in Stevenson.

Melanson won the 1,600 (5:46.02) and 3,200 (12:13.50) as La Center finished tied for third in the team standings with Seton Catholic. Staples won the 100 (13.41) and 200 (27.08) as King’s Way Christian placed fifth.

Seton Catholic had league champions in Elena Carrion in the 400 (1:01.68) and Jorie Freitag in the 800 (2:29.89). Stevenson had winners in Isabella Pitcher in the triple jump (30-10) and Rachel Zolp in the pole vault (8-6).

Other local winners were Sarah Turcic of King’s Way in the 300 hurdles (48.61) and Sierra Block of La Center in the long jump (16-3).

In the boys meet, Lincoln Krog of Stevenson and Jeremy Scott of La Center were dual winners.

Krog won the triple jump (38-2) and high jump (5-10) as Stevenson placed third. Scott won the 110 hurdles (17.28) and 300 hurdles (42.60) as La Center placed fifth.

Other local winners included Seton Catholic’s Nick Lamberton in the javelin (147-8), King’s Way’s Kyle Gonzales in the long jump (20-6) and Stevenson’s Luke Nichols in the pole vault (13-0).

Girls tennis

The top four singles and three of the top four doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of the 3A district tournament at Club Green Meadows on Friday.

Columbia River’s Lauren Skelly will face Prairie’s Josie Sullivan in one semifinal on Saturday, while Columbia River’s Faith Grisham will play Kelso’s Natalie Brown in the other.

Skelly, a junior, was runner-up last year at district and was a state qualifier.

The doubles final will be Kelso vs. Columbia River.

Columbia River teams of Natalie Black and Sophia Skimas will play Melinda Staub and Addison Dillon in one semifinals.

The other semifinal features Kelso teams of Claire Cowan and Kali Rae Prescott against Taylor Hoxeng and Rebekah Smith.

The top three placers from 3A district move on to play in the 3A bi-district tournament next week for state berths.

Softball

Camas 8, Skyview 5 — Alli Hancock threw thee innings of scoreless relief as the Papermakers took control with a four-run sixth inning to win a 4A Greater St. Helens League tiebreaker game.

Camas earns the No. 2 seed to next week’s district tournament, receiving a first-round bye. Skyview will be the No. 3 seed and open against Heritage.

Ridgefield 3, Hockinson 2 — The Spudders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and one more in the eighth to lock up sole possession of second place in the 2A GSHL.

La Center 5, Woodland 0 — Abby England struck out 12 in a six-hit shutout as the Wildcats finished their regular season schedule with a non-league win.
