EVERETT — Six of Snohomish County’s school districts top the list for offering the highest teacher salaries in the state.

Everett School District pays the most, with a top base salary of $97,445 that will rise to $103,000 for the 2017-18 school year under a new contract signed last fall. The Mukilteo School District is next, paying $92,282, according to The Daily Herald.

According to the Washington Education Association, close behind are school districts in Snohomish ($91,899), Arlington ($91,372), Edmonds ($90,644) and Marysville ($90,346).

“My first reaction is all teachers deserve at least this compensation in the state,” said Everett Education Association President Jared Kink.

Dozens of other schools in the state pay a top salary for equivalent experience of around $67,000, or $30,000 less.

For an Everett teacher to earn the top salary of $97,445, he or she must have 29 years of experience, a master’s degree and have earned at least 135 additional credits of professional education.

Everett Public Schools Superintendent Gary Cohn said the school board has worked to support teachers and that the community has supported the effort by passing property tax levies to help provide competitive salaries.

State officials will likely work to close that gap as it changes policies in order to be compliant with Washington Supreme Court’s McCleary decision on education funding.

The Supreme Court has held the state in contempt over the Legislature’s failure to make a plan for resolving the remaining issues over paying the full costs of basic education, while ending its overreliance on local tax levies. Currently, lawmakers don’t know exactly how much each district collects through those levies or how the money is spent.
