Baird header gives Chieftains first state win since 2005

Spencer Baird scored on a header in stoppage time to send the Columbia River boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Kamiakin in a Class 3A state tournament first-round game Tuesday in Kennewick.

Jack Kolosvay fed Baird with a perfect corner kick to lift the Chieftains to their first state tournament victory since 2005.

Columbia River will play at Kiggins Bowl this weekend in the state quarterfinal match. River will face Interlake of Bellevue, which beat Mount Spokane 1-0 Tuesday in Spokane. No game time was announced Tuesday.

Ethan Adams scored off an assists from Magnus Kofoed in the first half as Columbia River took a 1-0 lead. Kamiakin tied the match before halftime.

Girls golf

2A district — Kallie Sakamoto of Washougal will take a seven-stroke lead into the second round of the 2A district tournament after shooting a first-round 79 at Mint Valley Golf Course in Longview.

Sakamoto shot a 1-over-par 36 on the front nine. She had a triple-bogey eight on No. 11, but regrouped to finish at 79.

Hockinson’s Cameron Bielat is tied for second with Aunica Rybar of Mark Morris at 86. Xaalan Dolence is fifth at 87 and Kayla Besel is fifth at 92.

1A district — La Center’s Taylor Entenman placed third overall and the Wildcats finished second in the 1A district tournament in Tumwater.

Entenman shot a 98 on Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole total of 198, qualifying for state.

Softball

Washougal 11, Rochester 0 — Paige Forsberg threw five shutout innings and went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Panthers in a 2A district play-in game at Rochester.

Washougal advances to the double-elimination portion of the 2A district tournament. The Panthers will face R.A. Long at 4 p.m. Thursday in a first-round game at Fort Borst Park in Centralia.

Forsberg allowed two hits and struck out eight. Morgan Ratcliff went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Becca Bennett was 2 for 4 with three RBI for the Panthers.
