Weather Eye: More ‘normal’ May pattern continues, with some rain coming

The weather forecast panned out as we discussed Thursday, with a good soaking Saturday night and Sunday. Vancouver had 0.75 inch, and some outlying areas had an inch or more. The coastal beaches had much less, generally around a quarter inch.

While that is behind us and we face a fair weather day, another system will soon after bring cool showers back, with off and on rain through the weekend. Snow will fall down to 5,000 feet, maybe reaching the passes. So if you are going camping or fishing in the mountain lakes this week, expect some cold, wet weather.

I don’t see a return to the hot summer-like weather we enjoyed the past several weeks but more typical May weather with highs only in the 60s or maybe 70 with sunbreaks. Today we will be into the 70s.

With the weekend’s rainfall, we increased our monthly total to 0.89 inch as of 4 p.m. Monday. I’m sure we will pass the 1-inch mark in a few days, but we’re still running over a half-inch below average. Maybe with the warm, dry weather the first part of May and the cooler, wetter half, we might end up close to “normal.” I always say the averages are just a collection of extremes.

The Hazel Dell Parade of Bands is Saturday. As I say every year, it’s usually mild and dry for the event. With forecast models showing unsettled weather this weekend, one might get a little nervous. In the four-plus decades that I have lived here, only a handful of parades have had any moisture to deal with, and that was minor. So with that bit of luck running with us, perhaps the parade window will be dry.
