Letter: Oppose coal terminal

Thank you for making the case for clean air, water and jobs (May 13: “In Our View: Economy of Future is Now“). There is no good reason why “economy” and “environment” cannot be navigated successfully for all of us in Washington by saying a consistent and resounding “no!” to fossil fuel-based proposals. The only bad reason to continue saying “yes” to these projects is profit. Profit is limited to corporations and does not translate into meaningful or sustainable benefit for the citizens of our beautiful state and region.

The only way the deciders on these projects are going to come through with a “no” on our behalf is for citizens to do what we can to shout our opposition. That means acting when the opportunity presents itself, as it does for the proposed coal export terminal up in Longview.

Add your voice to say “no” to this proposal at the Department of Ecology’s public hearing, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Cowlitz County Event Center in Longview. Details on the hearing as well as a way to submit public comment online are at www.millenniumbulkeiswa.gov (the deadline for comments is June 13).

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
