Weather Eye: Mother Nature continues to bless Hazel Dell Parade of Bands

Mark up another banner for the Hazel Dell Parade of Bands. Skies were overcast and temperatures in the mid-50s Saturday, perfect for those marching bands. It was a little chilly for the fans but not bad with no measurable rain. Showers did break out afterward with a few rumbles of thunder and scattered downpours. So another dry year in the record books as Mother Nature continues to bless this annual event.

The pesky upper-level low east of the mountains continued to circulate showers and thundershowers Friday and Saturday. Another cold low drops down from Alaska today and Monday.

The high Saturday was 58 degrees as of 4 p.m., some 11 degrees below average. We were still running below average in the rainfall department by 0.60 inch with 1.23 inches so far this month. We’ll see if we can catch up the next few days as the forecast continues unsettled all week.

There will be sunny, dry periods as well, so not a complete washout. I’m hoping the weather turns sunny and warm by Memorial Day weekend; it will be close, as weather charts indicate some warm or hot weather as June rolls in.

An interesting note from Christmas Valley in Southeast Oregon. It was certainly Christmaslike with folks in the area waking up to a couple inches of snow on the ground early Saturday.

Weather geek and photographer Michael Trofimov captured images of the thunderstorm that rolled over the Battle Ground area and eastern parts of the county Friday. He posted a neat time-lapse video of the storm. You can see it at above left.

Have you had a taste of summer yet? Grab some local strawberries! We certainly had a glorious run of warm days to bring them to market so early. Hoping warm weather continues east of the mountains so those juicy Hermiston watermelons arrive early as well. Bring on the sunshine!
