Letter: U.S. spends much to defend others

Here we go again, provoking another nation for no reason other than belligerence. I’m referring to the May 20 story “NATO invites Montenegro as 29th member.” NATO, of course, does nothing without a U.S. OK. How many could find Montenegro on a map or explain how Montenegro will enhance U.S. security?

Russia’s population is 144 million, and its GDP is $3.685 trillion. Just three European NATO states — Poland, Germany and France — have a combined population of 187 million and combined GDP of $7.54 trillion. Why do Poland, Germany and France, together matching the Russian population and having double its GDP, need 24 other states, the U.S. and Montenegro to defend themselves from an inferior power?

If you have an answer for that, tell me why South Korea needs the U.S. to protect it from its neighbor North Korea when it has twice North Korea’s population and 23 times North Korea’s GDP.

Does anyone have a best friend who habitually spends far more than he earns, has debt so large it can never be repaid, yet insists he knows better than you how you should conduct your affairs? Didn’t think so, but perhaps he would be tolerated while showering you with money.
