SEATTLE — The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday that two bodies recovered from a gravesite near Oso on Monday are those of an Arlington couple who disappeared last month.

Monique Patenaude, 46, died from multiple gunshot wounds and her husband, 45-year-old Patrick Shunn, died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to a Thursday news release. Both deaths have been ruled homicides.

The couple were last seen April 11.

Investigators recovered Shunn’s and Patenaude’s bodies a few miles north of their home in the Oso. Tony C. Reed, one of two brothers accused of their slayings, led detectives to the site, according to Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton.

The grave was discovered off North Brooks Road, near the spot where the couple’s vehicles had been dumped.

Tony Reed, 49, and John B. Reed, 53, each have been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the slayings. John Reed, a former neighbor who shared a driveway with the couple, had an “ongoing and constant” feud with the couple and had threatened them, authorities have said.

After the couple’s disappearance on April 11, the brothers fled to Mexico, becoming targets of an international manhunt. Tony Reed surrendered to authorities last week; John Reed remains at large.

On Tuesday, Tony Reed pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder during his arraignment in Everett – his first court appearance in Washington since U.S. Marshals took him into custody May 16 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Defense attorney James Kirkham said this week his client is not guilty of murder and surrendered to defend himself against the charges.
