Intel will close its sites in at least seven countries

PORTLAND — The effects of Intel’s restructuring continue to ripple out across its operations around the world, with sites closing in at least seven countries.

Intel is cutting 12,000 jobs across the company by the middle of next year as it re-engineers the company to prepare for a long-term decline in its core market, the PC industry. It laid off 784 in Oregon last month and will cut several hundred more jobs in Washington County, its largest site anywhere, through project cancellations, buyouts and early retirement offers.

Intel notified employees recently that it’s closing sites in the United States, India, Canada, Japan and Russia, according to an internal company document obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Additionally, online tech journal ZDNet reported Thursday that Intel is closing a site in Bucharest, Romania, and laying off 200 people who work there. It also said the company plans to lay off at least 300 in Germany and close a site in the city of Ulm, citing a German magazine report.

Intel had already set plans to close a facility in DuPont, near Olympia. It’s unclear if Intel is closing other sites in the U.S., but it does not appear to be shuttering any Oregon operations.
