The Washington State University Extension office is offering a 16-week lifestyle change program starting in June for people with pre-diabetes.

The “Not Me” Diabetes Prevention Program is intended to support people in making changes to reduce their risk for Type 2 diabetes. Classes are held from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays starting June 20 or from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays starting June 16. The course will be one hour each week for 16 weeks followed by one hour once a month for eight months.

Specially trained coaches will work closely with clients to achieve goals and overcome hurdles. Session topics include tipping the calorie balance, four ways to healthy eating out and ways to stay motivated. The program features private weigh-ins, real-life problem solving and group support.

Recent graduates of the program have lowered their cholesterol and blood pressure, reduced medication intake, lost between 5 and 11 percent of their body weight and reduced their risk of diabetes, according to a press release.

People with diabetes often do not experience any symptoms. To know your risk score, take the quiz at ext100.wsu.edu/clark/healthwellness/nutrition.

Classes are at The Heritage Farm, 1919 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver. Pre-registration is required. The class is $430, but some insurance plans will cover the cost. For more information or to register, call 360-397-6060 ext. 5700.
