PORT ANGELES — A man was in critical condition Saturday after he was shot multiple times by Port Angeles police officers and a sheriff’s deputy, the Clallam County sheriff said.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement Saturday that James Sweet, 36, refused commands to drop his weapon and fired at police after a pursuit on Highway 101 near Port Angeles.

The office gave this account: A Port Angeles officer tried to stop the suspect for a vehicle infraction Saturday mornng. Sweet drove away, heading east on Highway 101 before crashing into a pickup truck. He fired at the pursuing officer, who fired back.
