Letter: Never apologize

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan started the greatest cataclysmic clash between nations that mankind has ever known. After four long years of war that took the lives of over 407,000 American military personnel and left over 671,000 maimed and disabled, with a total between 50 million and 60 million casualties worldwide, this great country should never apologize for the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that finally ended World War II.

My father fought those four long years as a wireman/forward observer in the 158th field artillery with the 45th Division. He fought his way from North Africa through Sicily to Anzio, Italy, and was with the first troops that entered the Dachau concentration camp. He and millions of other Americans fought to stop the tyrants of Japan and Germany.

After Germany surrendered, the military estimated 1 million casualties just for the Allies to end the war in the Pacific. The fanatical Japanese refused to surrender even though they knew they had lost the war. President Truman made the right decision to drop the bombs.

Why should we apologize for ending a war that Japan and Germany started? On the contrary, Japan should apologize to this great country every Dec. 7 so that we as a nation, and the world, never forget the cost to humanity because the tyrants of Japan and Germany sought to rule the world.

Apologize? Never.
