Vancouver – The American Red Cross is collecting travel-size toiletries to make comfort kits for local veterans.

The Red Cross is asking people to donate the items in honor of Veterans Day and to celebrate 100 years of Red Cross services in the region. Donations will be collected through Nov. 9, and volunteers will assemble the kits on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The kits will be distributed at local veterans hospitals and veterans events.

Donations can be dropped off at the Vancouver Blood Donation Center, 5109 N.E. 82nd Ave. Needed items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, first aid kits, hand sanitizer, body wash, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, foot powder, bandages, sewing kits, emery boards, feminine hygiene products and washcloths.

Those who want to help assemble kits can do so from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Red Cross Regional Headquarters, 3131 N. Vancouver Ave., in Portland.
