Save the Date: Veterans parade, upcoming races hit streets

The Lough Legacy Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver will mark its 30th anniversary celebrating those who served. The parade will honor veterans of all service branches, beginning with a ceremony at 10 a.m. today on the Marshall House lawn, before more than 2,000 individuals march or ride along East Reserve Street at 11 a.m., creating one of the largest Department of Veteran Affairs-sanctioned veterans parades on the West Coast. Race to Remember, a 5K and 11K run, will lead out the parade, and continue over the land bridge and the Columbia River trail at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. 360-992-1804 or www.fortvan.org/veteransparade

Kiggins Theatre and Niche Wine Bar will team up for Niche Noir Nights, pairing of film noir classics with wines influenced by the chosen films. The series kicks off with Alfred Hitchcock’s famous film, “Notorious,” starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman as spies and counterspies fall in love in post World War II South America. The wine flight will feature three South American pinots from 4 to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 at the wine bar 1013 Main St., Vancouver. East Meets West Bluegrass is a concert event two years in the making when Kentucky’s Kenny Stinson and Perfect Tym’n bring their traditional sounds to the Northwest to meet Oregon’s Kathy Boyd and Phoenix Rising, the 2015 International Music and Entertainment Association Bluegrass Group of the Year. Vancouver Symphony Chamber Series continues with a presentation of “The Soldier’s Tale,” one of Igor Stravinsky’s best known chamber works. The piece is based on a Russian folk tale that tells the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The performances feature a seven piece instrumental ensemble, led by guest conductor Ken Selden, and narrated by Kirk Mouser. The 14th annual Run for the Hungry 5K kicks off Thanksgiving at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 24 to raise money and food donations for the local food pantry, which helps feed more than 400 local families. The course winds through beautiful neighborhoods and Kerr Park, starting and ending at the Washougal High School stadium, 1201 39th St., Washougal. Registration is $25 to $30, $15 for ages 10 and younger. It’s $115 for a five-person team. The annual Turkey Trot has become a holiday tradition with participants taking to 5K and 10K courses along the Salmon Creek Trail the morning of Thanksgiving. All race proceeds benefit the Clark County Food Bank. Participants can also register for the Polar Bear Plunge into Klineline Pond that takes place after the race. Pick up your Christmas tree this year via train with the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad. Participants on a ride through the forest with a chance to bring home a Christmas tree, along with a visit from Santa and refreshments. The train leaves at 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 26-27, Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11 from the station, 207 N. Railroad Ave., Yacolt. Tickets are $16, $15 for seniors, $11 for youth, $9 for ages 2 to 4. It’s an additional $20 to $40 for a tree. Hot Buttered Run is a holiday themed race that features 5K, 12K and half-marathon routes, decorated with Santa, holiday music and a race chute lined with Christmas trees. There will also be a Kids Fun Run and Kids Kandy Kane 1K. Costumes encouraged, with participants ending the race with warm drinks, including rum, music and goodie bags. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 27 from Esther Short Park, West Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver.
