Letter: Hope can overcome fear

By Jim Comrada, VANCOUVER
Published: November 18, 2016, 6:00am

I fear for our nation and the very real threat to our Constitution now. I fear for all people of color and non-Christians. I fear for the future of voting rights. I fear for the future health of my daughter for she may, as she has said, “lose my access to health care which is an immediate threat to my life and limbs due to my autoimmune disease.”

I fear for all women’s rights and for the LGBTQ community. I fear for the education of all children, but especially for the future of Head Start and the families and their children who benefit from it. I fear for the cost of higher education and for scientific and medical research.

I fear deregulation and resultant unfair business practices toward workers, but especially for safety standards in the workplace. I fear for the future of our unions. I fear for the future of a working wage. I fear for the environment, especially for climate change and snow pack worldwide, and endangered and threatened animals and plants. I fear for the middle class and the impoverished.

The struggle continues.

There will always be hope, love, and compassion, and free speech for now.
