Letter: Step up fight against cancer

Last month, I traveled to Washington, D.C., with American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteers from across the country. I asked Congress to increase federal funding for the National Cancer Institute for cancer research, and to take action on legislation that would improve patient quality of life and remove cost barriers to colorectal cancer screenings for seniors.

I met with Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and visited Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s office and made it clear that now is the time to fund cancer research in support of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative. We can’t continue to lose 12,550 Washingtonians and 585,720 Americans to cancer each year. With the necessary funding, we can eliminate the words “you have cancer.”

I reminded our elected officials that each of us are just one degree from cancer; we’ve all been touched by cancer. That’s why all of us in Washington and every other state are counting on them to support the Cancer Moonshot to make cancer history. We can’t let another year pass without making cancer a national priority.

I know I made a difference. Visit www.acscan.org to join me in the fight against cancer.
