Investigators said they think excessive speed or driver impairment may have contributed to a Saturday night single-vehicle crash near Battle Ground that sent an unconscious and unresponsive man and two children to the hospital.

Deputies responded around 11:40 p.m. to a pickup crash in a field at Northeast 244th Street and 112th Avenue. Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Pritchard said it appeared the truck rolled at least once before leaving the roadway.

The driver — Todd Hoffman, 45, of Battle Ground — was found in the wreckage unconscious. Two passengers, ages 7 and 10, were hurt, but were able to climb from the vehicle. All three were hospitalized.

Hoffman was listed as in fair condition at a Legacy hospital Tuesday, but the children’s statuses were not available. Pritchard said that it didn’t appear at the scene that they were badly hurt.

The investigation was still ongoing Tuesday afternoon, Pritchard said.

“We’re going to wait on the (toxicology) lab results to come back before we take any action,” he said.
