Letter: Support workers with I-1433

Politicians in both parties like to brag about how the United States is the greatest country on earth, even as we lag so far behind other industrialized countries in important ways.

For example, the U.S. does not require that employers grant their employees safe and sick leave. This puts many workers in the position of choosing between their family’s immediate well-being and keeping their job. Need time off to care for a sick child or elderly family member? Or maybe you need to go to court in the middle of the day to secure a protection order against an abusive spouse? Under current law, your employer is under no obligation to let you miss work for these reasons. No one should ever have to choose between the safety of their family and the security of their job.

Luckily, this year Washingtonians have the chance to lead the nation in securing sick and safe leave for our workers. This year let’s vote “Yes” on I-1433 and show the world that we care about the workers who make our economy as strong as it is.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
