Letter: Speak out against coal

By Pat Freiberg. Vancouver
Published: October 24, 2016, 6:00am

The planet’s largest coal terminal is proposed for Longview with eight to 16 additional coal trains coming through Vancouver weekly. If the Millennium Bulk Terminal is built, each train car will leave behind 500 pounds of coal dust as the train travels from mine to terminal (Jaffe Research Group, University of Washington, May 20, 2016). Since coal is the most polluting of the fossil fuels, emissions from the mountains of burned coal will live in our air and acidify our oceans for decades to come.

A public hearing was hosted by the Department of Ecology and Cowlitz County earlier this year where public testimony against the project ran high. The Corps of Engineers is holding a final set of public hearings today from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Cowlitz Regional Conference Center, 1900 Seventh Ave., Longview, with a 5 p.m. rally. A second hearing will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds. This is our last chance to speak up for our communities, our health, our planet. Come and be heard.
