Community notebook: Royal Oaks wins OGA Men’s championship

A team from Royal Oaks Country Club conquered windy conditions to win its third OGA Men’s Team Championship since 2012 on Saturday in Bandon. Ore.

Playing on Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails, Royal Oaks won by eight strokes over second place Riverside Golf and Country Club of Portland. The 36-hole stroke play event saw the top three scores on each four-person team count toward the team’s total.

Royal Oaks’ team of Gaston de La Torre (La Center), Jake O’Neal (Vancouver), Jonathan Romano (Vancouver), and William Snow (Vancouver) shot a 12-over par 225 on the first day. They trailed Eastmoreland Golf Club by six shots.

Royal Oaks caught fire on the second day, shooting a 2-under-par 211. It was the only under-par team total on the second day.

Royal Oaks was led by Snow, whose 1-over par 143 total earned him medalist honors by one stroke over Arrowhead Golf Club’s Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.). Snow shot 5-over par 76 on Bandon Dunes’ Old Macdonald Course followed by a 4-under par 67 on the Bandon Trails Course.

De La Torre shot 8-over par 150 (74-76), O’Neal shot 8-over par 150 (82-68) and Romano shot 15-over par 157 (75-82).

Thirty-six OGA member clubs consisting of 144 players competed in the championship.

East County Pop Warner team headed to Reser

The East County Camas Jets Pee Wee football teams has its sights on the Pop Warner National Championships.

That journey begins this weekend at the regional quarterfinals in Corvallis, Ore.

The Jets are 10-0 and won the Greater Northwest Conference championship for the Pee Wee division (9-12 years old).

The regional quarterfinals take place Saturday and Sunday at Reser Stadium at Oregon State University. Regional semifinals are the following weekend in Spokane, followed by the regional championships at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas.

From there, winners go to the National Championships Dec. 3-10 in Florida.

Union rugby wins Fall 7s Cup Championship

Union, Prairie and Battle Ground rugby teams came away with titles as the Fall 7’s series of Rugby Oregon came to a close on Saturday at Canby, Ore.

Union won the Fall 7’s Cup Championship with a 36-12 win over Lincoln. For Union, Mikey Parries scored two tries, Max Burchett, Andrew Sperling, Tim Caplice each add one.

Battle Ground won the Plate title for the third/fourth-place teams, beating the Valley Rams 19-12.

Prairie won the Shield title for the fifth/sixth-place teams with a 20-0 win over Southeast.

The placings were determined after results from 14 games.

Registration is now open for all high school boys and girls to register for spring 15-a-side rugby at www.rugbyoregon.com.
