Letter: Moeller promotes common sense

While Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, is not as extreme in her gun views as her party’s nominee, Donald Trump, who claims that he could shoot someone and not lose votes, she does accept contributions from the NRA and enjoys an “A” grade from them.

I want a Congress that works for their constituents, not the NRA. The majority of Washingtonians support common-sense gun laws, yet Herrera Beutler has been absent from 15.8 percent of roll call votes on this and other issues. The average is 2.3 percent missed votes for representatives, according to govtrack.us.

I do not understand why civilians need to use a high-capacity assault rifle for hunting or repelling a home invasion; those types of weapons are used in a war engaging the enemy at a rapid rate of fire. Herrera Beutler clearly ignores the seriousness and urgency of this issue, which is why I will vote for Jim Moeller. Moeller is not going to be taking guns away from responsible gun owners; he is looking at banning assault rifles and high-capacity clips — something that I, as a mother of two school-aged kids, support. I do not want to live in fear of another mass shooting but to this date there has been no action from our elected politicians to prevent one.
