Three games into the football season, Skyview has learned a few things about itself.

For one, the Storm can storm back.

Skyview came up short against O’Dea, falling 35-32 at Kiggins Bowl.

But the Storm scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes, making Friday’s nonleague game interesting after trailing 35-17.

Skyview, ranked No. 9 in the 4A statewide poll, also learned it can trade punches with the state’s top teams.

One week after sticking with the top-ranked 3A team in Eastside Catholic, Skyview (1-2) took on a Seattle school ranked No. 3 in 3A.

“These are the best teams in the state,” Skyview quarterback Brody Barnum said. “We can hang with them. We clean two or three things up and we’re winning these games.”

Barnum threw for 295 yards, completing 25 of 38 passes. His 8-yard touchdown pass to Skyler Martin pulled the Storm within 35-32 with 44 seconds to go.

But Skyview’s ensuing onside kick went out of bounds, clinching the game for O’Dea (3-0).

Just minutes earlier, Skyview recovered an onside kick. That followed a 75-yard drive that Barnum capped with a two-yard touchdown run.

“Whenever we get down, we can get right back up and get in the fight,” Barnum said. “Every single one of the guys kept fighting.”

In playing two of the state’s top 3A teams on back-to-back weeks, Skyview learned plenty. Friday, some of the lessons were quick and harsh.

Leading 14-7 with 4:46 left in the first half, Skyview saw O’Dea score three touchdowns in just over three minutes.

Two of those touchdowns came shortly after Storm mistakes.

After Skyview had just taken a 14-7 lead, O’Dea started at Skyview’s 20 yard line after a long kickoff return and personal foul penalty. The next play, Mark Tafia scored on a run.

Skyview’s next drive ended when it lost a fumble on its own 12 yard line. The next play, Jamyn Patu rushed up the middle for a touchdown.

Skyview’s next drive ended on an interception. O’Dea needed just four plays to march 61 yards and take a 28-14 lead.

Due to injuries or suspension, the Storm were playing without seven would-be starters.

“I don’t want to make any excuses, but we’ll get better in a lot of ways as the year goes on,” Skyview coach Steve Keizer said.

And when the Storm enter 4A Greater St. Helens League play in three weeks against Camas, Skyview will be battle tested.

“We knew what we were getting into when we made the schedule,” Keizer said. “I just think we got a lot better by playing good people.”
