SPOKANE — Canadian officials have given Spokane permission to rename a 2-acre island in the Spokane River.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the Spokane Tribe of Indians will select a new name for Canada Island, which splits the upper Spokane Falls.

The Canadian government, through James Hill, the consul general of Canada in Seattle, has signed off on the name change, which is expected to occur in the coming months. Canada Island and surrounding areas of the river were important fishing ground for area tribes.

The craggy island has had a number of names before today. When the city first purchased it in 1972 it was named Crystal Island, then Cannon Island and finally Canada after the 1974 World’s Fair in Spokane.
