PORTLAND — Officials have decided not to pursue a proposed whitewater park at Willamette Falls.

The park would have gone at the site of a public Riverwalk from downtown Oregon City to the falls.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports local groups touted the park as a way to boost tourism and recreation, but project leaders decided unanimously Monday to stay focused on the primary goal of delivering the Riverwalk.

The project is headed by officials from Oregon City, Clackamas County, the state of Oregon and the Metro regional government. The group has been working on the Riverwalk for years and is in the thick of the design process.

Officials were concerned that the addition of a whitewater park would lead to delays. They were also worried about the cost and possible hazards for salmon migration.
