Letter: Protect Clark County farms

It was informative to read how Clark County communities plan for growth (“Small cities on a charm offensive,” Sept. 18). It is great to know that maintaining character is high on residents’ list of essentials to preserve.

It is also disappointing that there was no mention of preservation of Clark County’s rich farm land. It would seem that feeding our community with locally produced, quality fresh food would be an important asset to protect. When we look back in 20 years, I hope we don’t say “Wow — those trails connecting different parts of the community were very forward thinking but why didn’t we think about protecting the production of the quality food we need to survive?” As Columbian Editor Lou Brancaccio would say, “Don’t do stupid stuff.”

Let us not experience how “charming” being hungry can be. Let’s protect Clark County farmlands from being lost forever and turned into “charming” suburban Southern California communities.
