Vancouver – The Vancouver Police Activities League starts its monthly literacy events with 10 a.m. today at Hockinson Heights Elementary School in Brush Prairie.

A second, similar event is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Vancouver.

The events — designed to encourage reading and creating positive connections between children and police officers — also provide free books to children.

The events include safety presentation from the Vancouver Police Department or Clark County Sheriff’s Office, reading time with officers and tours of police vehicles.

This year, the organization is focusing on children in the second and third grades.
