COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — It was a difficult task, but Camas made it look easy.

The Papermakers spent much Friday on a bus trekking across the state, disembarking just across the Idaho border and spoiling the Coeur d’Alene High Homecoming by handing the Vikings a 49-30 whipping.

Michael Matthews ran for four touchdowns and quarterback Jack Colletto reeled off a 42-yard run for a touchdown before engineering a game-clinching, seven-minute drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

“You did something that’s really hard to do,” coach Jon Eagle told his players in the end zone while the home team headed off into a subdued night. “You got on the bus, you came all the way here and you won the football game.

“And do you want to know something? We can get better.”

The Papermakers found themselves in a 3-0 hole of their own making in the first quarter, stopping Coeur d’Alene at its own 32 on the opening series, but fumbled the ensuing punt to give the Vikings a first down at the Camas 30. Seth Harrison cashed in by kicking a 20-yard field goal.

Camas responded with a crisp, nine-play drive that Matthews capped with a dive from the 1 with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

Camas never trailed after that. Will Shultz scored on a 10-yard run to make it 14-3 after one quarter.

Cole Yankoff, Coeur d’Alene’s strong-armed junior quarterback, connected with Brody Lundblad on a 41-yard touchdown that cut the lead to 14-10

Colletto connected with Cooper McNatt on a 4-yard touchdown with 2:03 left in the first half to make it 35-24 and the Papermakers stopped Coeur d’Alene in the red zone as time ran out to head into the extra-long homecoming halftime with an 11-point advantage.

Camas extended the lead to 42-24 at the end of the third quarter on Matthew’s third touchdown run.

Yankoff got the Vikings in the end zone early in the fourth quarter, finding Joe Vang with a with a seven-yard strike, but Isaiah Abdul found an opening and blocked the point-after kick to make of 42-30.

Camas sealed the win with a 12-play drive that covered 61 yards and wound more than seven minutes off the clock.

“That’s the important thing,” Colletto said. “We played all four quarters.”
